Late fall in the Appalachians. In the valleys below these blue ridges lie deep forests and fields with an abundance of diversity and visual delights. The end of autumn brings quietness and calming of growth, and as the last of the color dissolves into fallen leaves, we witness life’s transition for winter. The color palette of late autumn is subdued and one must be alert to the soft light that permeates the now bare branches. I love the richness of the browns, burnt umbers, grays, and oranges, with highlights of color holdouts. The forest now waits for the first frost of the season and the cold winter ahead as it has for centuries.
